Expanding Horizons in HR Systems
I started my career in HR in the early 1990s at the Chicago Tribune. My initial role involved benefits administration as a report writer, which provided me with valuable exposure to HR systems and payroll. This experience laid the groundwork for consulting on workforce and HR system implementations for various firms.
I began my tenure at the University of Chicago, initially managing HR systems and eventually expanding my role to include compensation and various other responsibilities. My career then progressed into strategic roles at St. Luke’s Health System in Boise, ID, the Cleveland Clinic and WellSpan Health in York, PA, where I served as VP of Total Rewards, which also included payroll, performance management and employee recognition.
In my current role at Beacon, I am focused on reimagining our HR department as a strategic business partner. This involves addressing challenges like workforce shortages, changing reimbursement models, tighter margins and the integration of new technologies like AI. My passion for learning, problem-solving and collaborating with leaders continues to drive our efforts to transform HR to meet these evolving demands.
Innovative HR Strategies
HR leaders focus on attracting and retaining top talent by revisiting fundamental strategies and implementing advanced programs and policies. Instead of traditional recruitment methods, we are forging community partnerships, like the South Bend School District and local educational institutions, to develop future talent.
Our Beacon Scholars program, in collaboration with Ivy Tech, supports high school students pursuing nursing careers with financial aid and clinical opportunities. Internally, the Beacon Pathways program aids current employees in exploring new roles within the organization, offering tuition reimbursement and professional development. We are also investing in leadership development and upskilling our HR team to meet evolving organizational needs, reflecting a broader trend of HR adaptation.
Crafting a New Era of Efficiency
We are committed to transforming into a fully digital organization. This involves enhancing our digital front door to improve patient experiences and investing in technologies that streamline our business operations.
Our goal is to make every interaction, from patient care to administrative tasks, more efficient and effective.
Transformation relies on seamless collaboration. We are working closely with IT, clinical departments, finance and supply chain teams to pinpoint our needs and implement solutions that drive our growth. By adopting a strategic perspective, we are focused on integrating advanced technology platforms that meet the evolving demands of both patients and staff. Our commitment to automation and digital innovation highlights our dedication to continuous improvement. We are excited about the strides we are making and look forward to reaching new milestones in our technological journey.
“This mindset of limitless curiosity and creativity fosters innovative approaches and solutions in our roles as CHROs, enabling us to collaborate effectively with leaders and employees.”
Leading with Insight for Overall Success
We are focused on strategically building teams and advocating for a comprehensive view of the employee experience to meet organizational goals, which in turn enhances patient care and community impact. Our HR approach emphasizes a community-centered approach to attract talent and foster collaboration among HR leaders to share insights and make informed decisions. Staying engaged with employees and being visible within the organization is crucial for effective leadership and team development.
Beyond the Box
My advice to fellow peers and aspiring professionals is to seek learning opportunities to foster growth and effective communication, find a mentor and maintain focus. Understand that not every decision will be perfect. The key is to adapt, recover and continue learning from mistakes. Balance confidence with humility, as this blend of self-assuredness and openness to growth earns respect.
Being a lifelong learner is invaluable. Push beyond conventional limits by embracing innovative thinking. During a recent strategy session, we were inspired to transcend traditional boundaries and eliminate the box altogether. This mindset of limitless curiosity and creativity fosters innovative approaches and solutions in our roles as CHROs, enabling us to collaborate effectively with leaders and employees.
